A ceremonial pipe is a sacred object, a spiritual tool for ceremony, meditation and connecting with a higher power.
When commissioning the carving of a pipe, some people have a specific idea of the images they'd like integrated in their pipe, others ask me to dream a pipe for them.
At this stage I make a series of sketches to work out all the details of the design of the stone bowl and the wooden stem of the pipe. Some people like to see these drawings and make suggestions & comments, others prefer to not see the design until the carving is finished.
I have a range of high quality coloured stones to choose from: black, green, creamy white with red veins, a stripped alabaster stone and traditional red pipestone.
For stems, I usually use the wood from a local tree called 'sumac'. It has a rich variety of golden yellow tones. I also have maple and oak. These hardwoods are fine grained and lighter in colour.
I also carve a range of T-bowl pipes ( this is a simple, elegant, traditional shaped bowl – like an upside down ‘T’ ) according to your specifications (colour & length). Each pipe is unique.
